The very first time Elaine performed a solo guitar/vocal song in front of an audience, she was twelve years old and the show was a school concert. Elaine’s Chorus teacher, taken with Elaine’s angelic voice, asked her if she wanted to sing the song by herself. Of course she answered “Yes!” without hesitation. He then told her that the song required guitar accompaniment, and asked her if she played. Again, Elaine answered “Yes!” (and began another lifelong habit of never saying no to anything music related).
That same evening, Elaine asked an uncle if she could borrow a guitar he had stored away in a closet; she needed it for her solo debut performance which was coming up in a few weeks. “I didn’t know you played guitar,” he said. “I don’t,” she replied. “So I really need to learn it quick!” (Elaine did learn the song on guitar. Her teacher never knew she couldn’t play, and in fact she played many more songs with the chorus group and sang many more solos. Elaine credits that teacher, Mr. Mario Cerroni, for “teaching me how to really sing.”)
Listen to a few of Elaine’s original songs:
Casting.mp3
(Elaine has written several of her songs while dreaming; that is, literally asleep. “Casting” is one of those songs. Words and Music received as a gift by Elaine Lucia from the Universe.)
Tell_Me_So_byElaineLucia.mp3
(Guitar and Bass played by Elaine’s dear friend Michael Goodell; this is an unedited, live vocal track. Words and Music by Elaine Lucia.)
I_Call_You_Sonny_by_ElaineLucia.mp3
(One of the many songs Elaine wrote about her father. Music co-written with Michael Goodell, Lyrics by Elaine. Mr. Goodell plays guitar on this one, the rest of the boys in Elaine’s Sextet play the other instrumental tracks.)
I_Had_A_Feeling_byElaineLucia.mp3
(The bridge in the song is taken from a dream in which Elaine was having a conversation with her father, asking his advice…he told her what she was doing “wasn’t wrong…then you smiled, and were gone.” Just like in the dream. Words and Music by Elaine.)
Final_Remembrance.mp3
(This song has been played, or sung by other singers, at funerals and memorial services ever since it was released on Elaine’s CD, “A Sonny Day.” Elaine would love to see it used someday for a film or documentary. The lovely, haunting music was written by Gerry Grosz; Elaine asked Gerry if she could write the lyrics that came to her when she heard the song the first time. He said yes, and loved her final version.)
Elaine has over 70 copyrighted and/or published original songs, most of which have been recorded and are available for film, commercial, and private use. Her song, “Sayulita,” was recently used in the small independent film, “The Mating Game,” which enjoyed excellent reviews at film festivals across the U.S. during the summer/fall of 2009. Elaine performs her solo act regularly, and in spring of 2012 will debut a new band featuring Bay Area veteran jazz musicians playing her eclectic, original songs. Stay Tuned!
